VOLBIT – Waterproofing of the parking lot

Parking lot waterproofing has become an essential element of every renovation and new construction of a multi-story parking lot. We can define it as the application of a waterproof membrane (or waterproof layer) that wraps around a building to protect the underlying structure from damage by the elements. In the last blog, we talked about VOLBIT products that are ideal for basement waterproofing, and in today's blog you will find out everything about how you can use VOLBIT 1K and 2K products in parking lot waterproofing.

What is parking lot waterproofing and what is its purpose?

Waterproofing the parking lot prevents water from penetrating through the structure of the parking lot in order to protect the concrete and steel reinforcement inside. If water leaks out, you will encounter various steel corrosion problems over the years, which will compromise the structural integrity of the parking lot causing safety hazards and deterioration.

The reason so many parking lots now include waterproofing treatments is to protect the surfaces from harsh chemicals from cars such as oil, de-icers, exhaust fumes, chlorides and other automotive fluids. It also protects exposed surfaces from UV radiation and weather effects due to wet and cold weather conditions. A significant advantage of waterproofing is that it provides protection against abrasion and wear in high-traffic areas (cases where waterproofing is also the final wearing layer on the road surface).

Parking lot waterproofing - cost or investment?

Parking lot waterproofing actually saves property owners and facility managers money, as its durability and crack-bridging properties mean longer life and less maintenance. The material is designed to repel oils and chlorides from impregnating the surface, which means easier cleaning. Consequently, repair and maintenance costs are kept to a minimum.

VOLBIT - purpose and characteristics

VOLBIT is a polymer-bituminous elastic coating filled with polystyrene granules designed for waterproofing and protection primarily of buried reinforced concrete walls, but also of other UV-exposed surfaces such as AB base plates, balconies, terraces or parking lots (under glaze or e.g. fall concrete). . During colder weather, the product VOLBIT 2K is primarily used, which contains a drying accelerator in the second component, while VOLBIT 1K is used mainly in summer.

The Volbit product has a number of advantages, some of which are as follows:

  • Suitable for vertical and horizontal installation
  • Easy installation and composition without solvents
  • Easy to apply
  • Extended open installation time
  • Elastic properties enable bridging of cracks
  • High resistance to bacteria, salts and acids from the soil
  • High stability

Areas of application

  • For vertical and horizontal installation
  • For waterproofing, protection and sealing
  • For waterproofing the foundation
  • For gluing thermal insulation panels and other lighter panels

Installation procedure

The substrate must be dry, clean and free of sharp edges, cracks, frost, oil, grease, dust, chemical compounds and other impurities. Wooden, metal and plastic studs must be removed and penetrating water and other leaks must be prevented. Holes and voids must be filled. Bubbles due to pores in concrete can be reduced by installing a bonding layer or slurry. It is also recommended to prime the foundation with a diluted product.

Waterproofing of the parking lot with the help of VOLBIT products

In cases where the finishing of the parking lot is not UV-stable waterproofing or asphalt, but a form of concrete surface, an excellent choice for waterproofing is the polymer-bitumen elastic coating VOLBIT.

As it does not have certified UV stability, VOLBIT must be protected with a concrete layer or glaze, and it becomes an excellent alternative to classic waterproofing, such as bitumen plasters or even synthetic single-layer membranes.

In addition to the trowel, the product can also be installed by mechanical spraying, thus speeding up execution compared to classic waterproofing and reducing construction deadlines.
