Safety and longevity: Why pool waterproofing is essential

A pool in your backyard can be a source of immense fun and relaxation. However, to ensure that the pool remains in top condition in the long term, not only after construction, one of the key aspects to be taken care of is waterproofing.

Without adequate waterproofing, the pool can become a source of frustration and unnecessarily high costs. In this blog, we'll explore why pool waterproofing is important and how you can ensure your pool is safe and long-lasting.

WHY IS POOL WATERPROOFING SO IMPORTANT?

Pool waterproofing prevents water from leaking from the pool into the surrounding terrain and structures. Without it, water can seep through microcracks in concrete or other materials, leading to problems such as:

  • Damage to the pool structure and surrounding areas
  • Water loss and increased water costs
  • Appearance of mold and fungi due to moisture
  • The need for frequent and expensive repairs

HOW IS POOL WATER-INSULATION ACHIEVED?

Pool waterproofing is achieved using different materials and techniques, depending on the type and construction of the pool. Here are some key steps in the waterproofing process:

  1. Surface preparation

Before applying the waterproofing material, the surface of the pool must be thoroughly cleaned and prepared. This includes removing any debris, repairing cracks and making sure the surface is smooth.

  1. Choosing the right material

There are several different types of waterproofing materials, including liquid membranes, bituminous tapes and PVC sheets. Choosing the right material depends on many factors, including the type of pool, climate conditions and specific project requirements.

  1. Precise application

Applying waterproofing material requires expertise and precision. This may involve manual application of liquid membranes or machine welding of PVC sheets. It is important to ensure that all joints, corners and transitions are carefully sealed to prevent any leakage.

  1. Testing

After applying the waterproofing layer, it is important to carry out testing to ensure that there are no leaks. This may involve filling the pool with water and monitoring it over several days.

AND FINALLY, IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER

Adequate waterproofing is essential for the longevity and functionality of your pool. With proper preparation, selection of quality materials and professional application, you can enjoy your pool for years, without worrying about leaks and damage. RÖFIX – EXPERT RECOMMENDATION

The concrete surface must be cleaned and all non-load-bearing parts must be removed (the substrate must be clean, solid and load-bearing). If there is damage due to rusted reinforcement or the reinforcement is too close to the surface of the concrete, it must be thoroughly cleaned, the reinforcement and part of the concrete next to the reinforcement should be coated with Creteo®Repair CC 170 Anticorrosive Protection.

It is necessary to apply the primer RÖFIX AP 300 Concentrate, drying for at least 24 hours. After Creteo®Repair CC 170 has dried, level all unevenness and depressions with RÖFIX FS 630 Leveling compound with reduced slip, and level the entire concrete pool shell with FS 630.

The very next day (in normal and dry weather conditions), waterproofing can be carried out with RÖFIX AS 345 Optiseal® 1K flexible waterproofing or RÖFIX AS 341 Optilastic® 2K flexible waterproofing, into which alkali-resistant reinforcing mesh RÖFIX P50 is immersed, and in all corners RÖFIX AS 910 Sealing tape, and care should also be taken to ensure quality sealing of the connection with drains (cuffs, ...). After the waterproofing has dried, the ceramic tiles are glued with RÖFIX AG 610 Bianco FLEX C2TE S1 or RÖFIX AG 685 SUPERFLEX C2TE S2 flexible adhesive (for large tile formats). Grouting is performed exclusively with RÖFIX AJ 315 EP Two-component epoxy grouting compound.
